About the Course

Latin Readings: The History of Rome is designed for intermediate students of Latin who already have a foundation in grammar and are looking to engage more with reading and translation. Students will gain confidence and skill in Latin as we read through the history of Rome, from its founding, through the period of the kings and the republic, to Caesar and Cicero and the Empire, using an adapted version of Livy’s history of Rome: Ab Urbe Condita. The reader provides grammatical and vocabulary assistance on the same page as the text to aid the student in translation. In this course we will begin slowly, covering only about 30 lines of translation per week, but by the end of the year we will be able to cover twice as much. Translation work is done both independently and in the Live Class. We will begin translations in the Live Class, which will then be completed independently by the students. Translations finished independently will be reviewed in the next Live Class. Next to translation, vocabulary is a major component of this course. Students must create vocab cards to study for weekly vocab quizzes. In the second semester, students will create and give presentations on historical figures from Roman history. Grade Level: High School (advanced Middle School students are welcome.)

Independent Work

Students will grow comfortable reading and translating Latin through independent work that is guided by grammar and vocabulary aids.

Live Class

Each week we will meet together as a class to discuss student translations, the grammar and vocabulary of the text, and the historical context of our readings.

Latin Community

Students can communicate and collaborate together and have access to a community of like-minded Latin learners across the country. Students will also give presentations, post papers, and dialogue on homework topics here.

Hi, I'm your instructor,  Kyle Brown

With a deep and personal love for the Latin language and Roman history, I've been blessed with the opportunity to teach these classes in a variety of settings. I've taught Latin to all types of students, from middle schoolers to graduate students and everything in between. As a classical homeschooling father, I also know how important it is to provide your children with the best quality education you can. That's why I'm offering these courses. It's my goal to help bridge the gap between parents who want to offer their children the best education they can, but perhaps don't have a strong Latin background themselves. Parents, I'm here to tell you: it is possible. And I'm happy to help provide the solution. With you, the homeschooling parent, in mind I've designed these courses to be the perfect balance of flexible and hands-on. God bless.
